Somatic Tharapy
Healing doesn't always happen through words alone.
When we go through something painful; a traumatic experience, prolonged stress, grief, or loss, our bodies hold onto it long after our minds have tried to move on. You might notice it as tension you can't shake, a restlessness you can't explain, a heaviness in your chest, or a nervous system that feels permanently stuck in high gear. Talk therapy is powerful, but sometimes the body needs to be part of the conversation too.
Somatic therapy works with the connection between mind and body to help you process and release what's been stored physically, not just mentally. At Wellhouse, we use a range of body-aware approaches including Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, breathwork, body scan and awareness practices, and movement-based techniques. As with all of our services, your treatment is tailored to you; we'll draw from whatever combination of approaches best fits your needs, your comfort level, and where you are in your healing.
What we can help with
Trauma & PTSD — Traumatic experiences don't just live in memory. They live in the body; in the way you flinch, freeze, or feel unsafe even when you're not. Somatic therapy helps your nervous system process what happened so you're no longer living as if it's still happening.
Anxiety & stress — Chronic anxiety often shows up physically before we even recognize it mentally. Racing heart, shallow breathing, tight shoulders, a gut that won't settle. We work with the body's stress response directly, helping you build the capacity to feel safe in your own skin.
Chronic pain — Emotional pain and physical pain are more connected than most people realize. For many people, unresolved trauma or stress manifests as physical symptoms. Somatic therapy addresses both layers together rather than treating them as separate problems.
Grief & loss — Grief is one of the most physical experiences there is. Somatic approaches give grief somewhere to go; helping the body process loss in a way that sitting and talking alone sometimes can't reach.
Nervous system regulation — If your baseline feels like bracing for impact, somatic therapy can help reset that. We work to build flexibility and resilience in your nervous system so you can move through life's difficulties without being floored by them.
Burnout & exhaustion — Burnout isn't just tiredness; it's a full-body depletion that takes more than rest to recover from. Somatic therapy helps identify where you're holding stress and begins the process of genuine restoration.
What to expect
Somatic therapy may feel different from traditional talk therapy. Sessions are slower and more intentional. Your therapist will gently guide your attention to what's happening in your body, noticing sensations, breath, posture, and movement as sources of information. You won't be asked to do anything that feels uncomfortable or unsafe. We move at your pace, always.
No prior experience with body-based work is needed. Curiosity and a willingness to slow down are enough to begin.
A note for those new to somatic work
It's completely normal to feel unsure about this approach, especially if you've only ever experienced traditional talk therapy. Many of our clients come to somatic therapy after feeling like something was still missing from their healing and find that working with the body fills in what words couldn't quite reach.
